Morning Meditation, May 20
Please enjoy this discussion and meditation by Rev. Chris Kell on Archangel Michael.

–John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion:

The angels are the dispensers and administrators of the divine beneficence toward us; they regard
our safety, undertake our defense, direct our ways, and exercise a constant solicitude that no evil
befall us.

In his book Angels: A History, Professor David Albert Jones writes that although there is much discussion and sometimes dissention, Jewish, Christian, and Islamic theologians all agree that angels exist, and that they are spiritual beings, or creatures, created by God, yet neither eternal or equal to God.

In these modern times, the esteemed Rev. Billy Graham tells us that:

The history of virtually all nations and cultures reveals at least some belief in angelic beings. . . . Today some hard-nosed scientists lend credence to the scientific probability of angels when they admit the likelihood of unseen and invisible intelligence. . . . those who take the Bible at full value cannot discount the subject of angels as speculation or hollow conjecture. After all, the Scriptures mention their existence almost three hundred times.

Archangels are the messengers of God. The term is derived from the Greek phrase “the greatest messenger of God.” Arch means “the first,” or “the greatest,” and angel means “messenger of God.” Michael’s name is Hebrew for “Who is like God.” So Archangel Michael means “the greatest messenger, who is like God.” However, this does not mean he is God, or that we should pray to him as we would pray to the Divine. Rather, he is one who brings pure messages of love, wisdom, and power directly to us from Spirit.

Historically, we know the most about Archangel Michael. He is the main leader of the Archangels, and oversees the guardian angels. He is said to be the angel closest to the Divine, and is designated as the Prince of the Heavenly Hosts. Archangel Michael is one of three angels actually named in Scripture and most spoken about in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic texts. He is envisioned as standing to the right of the throne of God, and is considered by many religious scholars to be the “right hand of God” representing mercy, loving-kindness, openheartedness, and caring.

In the Old Testament Archangel Michael figures as the guardian of Israel. He appears to Joshua as he is preparing to lead the Israelites into battle at Jericho and reveals himself as “captain of the hosts of the Lord” and the leader of the army of God against the forces of evil.

In Muslim lore, he is Mika’il, the angel of nature who provides both food and knowledge to man. In Catholic tradition, he is the patron and protector of the Church

Archangel Michael, also known as St. Michael as a sign of respect and honor, has churches named after him. There are many pictures and images of St. Michael, often depicting his sword held above his head and a demon pinned underneath Him. These paintings show how his primary purpose is to kill fear and eliminate ego from among men and women.

You may ask, why might we call upon Michael instead of God directly? Well, there is no reason why we can’t go straight to God with our petitions, and if that is preferable to you it is probably the right path for you. Yet, even when we talk to God directly, angels are the messengers he sends back to us. So, we can ask God directly, or ask God to send Michael to our aid, whichever feels more comfortable – the results are the same. I personally prefer to talk to the angels because I have a stronger and more personal feeling of connection with the angels, and I believe that is why God gave them to us.

According to modern mystics and spiritual teachers, Archangel Michael loves all people unconditionally, and assists everyone who asks for his assistance. He is the embodiment of compassion and represents the all-encompassing strength of the Divine. He demonstrates to us that with spiritual faith, all things are possible.

In contemporary terms, every Archangel has its own light that corresponds to its specific purpose. Michael is usually depicted as a male human-like figure who radiates a golden glow that makes him appear tanned and blond. He is often surrounded by an aura of royal purple that is so bright it looks like cobalt blue. Those who connect with Michael often report seeing sparkles or flashes of bright blue or purple.

Archangels also have their own specialties and many special powers. Archangel Michael is the Archangel of protection, peace, safety, clarity, and moving forward. He is the patron saint of grocers, soldiers, doctors, mariners, paratroopers, police officers, and sickness. He is the angel who accompanies us when we die and pass beyond this physical existence.

Archangel Michael is wisdom in action. For each situation or crisis, he has the perfect solution. Invite Archangel Michael into your life, and he will help empower you to live in love, confidently moving into the direction of your dreams. He will lend you support, courage, and confidence. He will boost your resolve to make healthy life changes, as well as guide you to new opportunities, help you heal from past experiences, and when the time comes, help you to cross over from physical life to the spiritual life.

Call on Archangel Michael when you need courage or strength. If you’ve had any sort of stressful or negative experience and it’s causing you pain, either physical or emotional, call on Archangel Michael, the supreme helper in any experience that brings up fear. Michael will protect you, eradicate fear and stress, and transform your fearful mind into one filled with peace.

Archangel Michael is a steady reminder of God’s presence on Earth. He is more than happy to assist you in all matters, in any moment; however, he will honor your free will and will not interfere (except in critical life or death situations) without your express permission. All you have to do is think Archangel Michael’s name and he is there. But remember, you must first ask for his assistance, listen to his instructions, and then follow his guidance.

The intention of our meditation today is to meet Archangel Michael, and ask for his companionship, guidance, and protection on our spiritual path.

So, let us begin.

Get comfortable in your chair, with your head supported. Breathe deeply and fully, releasing all tension and tightness. Breathe in tranquility, exhale any turmoil you are feeling in your mind and body. Take another breath, hold for a couple of seconds, and release.

As you breathe, imagine little roots going down from the soles of your feet, pushing down into the ground below you, allowing you to feel safe and connected to the earth.

Now see a golden light pouring down around you. Imagine you are sitting within a golden circle of this loving light.

When you are ready, invite Archangel Michael into the circle, saying “Archangel Michael, I call upon you now. Please come to me.”

Visualize Archangel Michael. Imagine him moving swiftly on a golden ray of light with his sword and bright blue light. See him as a majestic angel, arrayed in shining armor and wearing a brilliant sapphire blue cape. See him standing before you. Breathe in his comforting and soothing energy. You are safe.

Imagine Archangel Michael wielding a sword of blue flame to deliver you from all negative thoughts and conditions that impede your soul’s progress on the spiritual path. See yourself wearing a helmet and armor of blue steel that will prevent any physical or spiritual danger from reaching your body or mind. Imagine Archangel Michael covering you with a cape of bright blue light, surrounding you with his protection.

Ask Michael to assist you in releasing any attachments to fear and to people, places, or things that no longer serve you.

Ask him to assist you in releasing any sort of un-forgiveness, anger, or any other negative thoughts you may be harboring consciously or unconsciously. (pause)

Ask Archangel Michael for the strength and courage to follow your divine life path. Ask him to empower you to live in love, confidently moving into the direction of your dreams with confidence. Ask him to protect you, to be your bodyguard as you go through your day.

Now, just relax and enjoy the loving presence of Archangel Michael. Perhaps he has a Divine message for you.

As we come to a close, thank Michael for joining you today. Believe that you are being taken care of. Dwell in the love, peace, and protection of Archangel Michael.

We close with the prayer found at Psalm 91:9-13:

9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
