Notes on Jeanie Ward’s ‘The Power of Thank You’

Poet and philosopher Mark Nepo writes “the simplest and deepest way to make who we are at one with the world is through the kinship of gratitude. Nothing brings the worlds of spirit and earth together more quickly.”[1]

What is he saying here? I believe that he is showing us a path toward connection, peace, and wholeness. That path is gratitude – living your life, every day, in the energy of thankfulness.

Even if you’re not sure what you’re thankful for, keep that energy of gratefulness strong. You’ll be amazed at what unfolds when you make the choice to live your life with a willingness to be grateful for it all. Do we all struggle with this? Yes, we do.  That’s why we call it “practice!”

A wise person once said “yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery, and today is a gift.” Every day, every moment is a gift and they keep coming. If we think we’ve fallen short in the past, we get to try again, and then again. If we have relationships to heal, we are given another chance. If we are rushing too fast to see what’s before us, we have the chance every day to slow down and savor the moment. What gifts!

Even the things that challenge us give us opportunities to show up at our best and make a difference – we perhaps can heal one small corner of the world. We are surrounded by such gifts.

Let me give you three ways the power of “thank you” can change your life. First, it transports you to a place of openness and grace – a different way of experiencing your world. Brother David Steindl-Rast says that every morning he asks himself “what will surprise me today?” He recognizes that his world is full of wonder, joy, and unexpected gifts. So is yours.

Second, it transmutes the lower energy in which we may find ourselves to a higher vibration of love, harmony, and wholeness. We know that we are energy beings, capable of being lifted or lowered by the energy around and in us. Gratitude raises our vibrational frequencies.
Third, gratitude helps you transcend. Whatever weighs you down or limits your view simply loses its hold when you open your heart to the loving energy of thankfulness. Whenever your heart opens, fear cannot remain.

It was Meister Eckhart who said “if the only prayer you ever say in your life is thank you, it will be enough.” The energy of “thank you” says it all – it is the way we say “yes” to all of life.
