Greetings, and happy Mother’s Day weekend!
In a world so divided and violent, does any space remain for the
unconditional love that Mother’s Day honors? Can it still make a difference?
That’s up to us. This past week, our focus again turned to the Supreme Court
when we learned through a leaked draft opinion that a majority of the court had
voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. Overnight an 8 foot fence went up around the
Supreme Court, imitating those barriers periodically raised around the Capitol
as well as the enhanced fencing permanently around the White House. If you
think this is a pretty apt symbol of the state of our national discourse, you
could be right. We sometimes despair that our national and community divisions
may simply be the way of the future.
Now is not the time to give up, or lose hope. Mother’s Day, a day on which
we celebrate love and its power to transform and lift up, gives us a message
that is not limited to the day itself. Like mothers everywhere, we keep going
for the sake of what we love, and those we love. As it says in the Christian
scriptures, “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all
things, endures all things. Love never ends.” Strengthened by the knowledge
that we carry the divine light always and everywhere, we continue on with
purpose and hope to build a world of justice, equity, and peace. We continue
on, together.
So let’s honor that energy of unconditional and enduring love this weekend.
